An international preoccupationSecurity is of paramount concern at the Port of Boulogne-sur-Mer, both through initiatives and regulations, specifically under the aegis of the IMO - the European Union’s International Maritime Organisation.
At the end of 2002, the IMO’s concern for the sea transport and passage through ports of dangerous or polluting goods resulted in a new code for the security of ships and port facilities. This is also known as the ISPS Code - International Ship and Port facility Security Code. This code is supplemented by European Parliament and Council Regulation EC 725/2004 on enhancing ship and port facility security and by European Parliament and Council Directive 2005/65 of 26th October 2005 on enhancing port security.
International and European regulations on security are enshrined in French law by the Maritime Ports Code (Book III).
Observance of the ISPS Code, which governs access to the port and the fight against terrorism, is enforced by an ASIP: Port Facility Security Officer.
The Port of Boulogne-sur-Mer and its various facilities observe the ISPS Code.
